Football, babies, and Neitzche.
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on September 3, 2009
I was able to go to practice for the first time yesterday. One of the players came and talked to me and told me he was going to be a father in December…he’s only a sophmore! The fact that he approached me and shared this with me hopefully will mean that I am gaining trust among some of the players. Another player I met last year who is sidelined with injury spoke with me freely about his religious views which were deeply influenced by his introduction to philosophy class where he was introduced to Neitzche. He was so postmodern he would not even acknowledge that what Hitler did was wrong, only that he did not like what he did, but there is no such thing as right or wrong so he couldn’ t say that it was actually wrong!

The Messiah and the afterlife.
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on September 1, 2009
Today while we were at Lakeland, I was able to talk to a guy named Chris, who is Jewish. I mentioned that I had heard some Rabbi scholars talk about Judaism having a lack of interest in the afterlife and asked him what his views of the afterlife were. He said he didn’t believe in an afterlife. We were able to talk about that for a bit and then got on the subject of the Messiah. He was quick to point out that Jesus cannot be the Messiah since there is not worldwide peace. I talked for quite a while after that about how God shows us glimpses of what He is doing and that greater fulfillments are yet to come, and I shared with him how just as the TANACH taught us how God created Israel to be a light to the nations, David to be the king, the Temple to provide access to God, Christ is the fulfillment of all these things: He is everything Israel was supposed to be; a perfect light to the other nations, he is everything David was supposed to be, a perfect king ruling with justice and fairness, He is everything the Temple was supposed to be, perfect access to God. I also talked about how God revealed glimpses of the Trinity even in the Torah. I asked him if he thought God’s character is loving and displays love perfectly, then I asked if God is independant of creation and needs nothing from creation. Then I asked, if God is love, but has no one to express His perfect love to… and he finished the sentence, “did God need to create us?”
He then shared that he has studied Judaism and Christianity, but never actually read the books, not even the Tanach. I encouraged him to read them and told him what the New Testament was about, and told him that if I see him again on campus, I will give him a copy of the Bible that he can read for himself. Pray for Chris, that God will draw him to himself and that the cross of Christ will not be foolishness to him!

First Lake Erie meeting-26!
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on August 31, 2009
We had 26 people at our first Lake Erie meeting last night, it was a great turn out and I think a real encouragment for all the student leaders that were involved. We also incorporated something here that we used to do at Wright State called, “the Extra Mile.” In this we encorporate some kind of fellowship activity after our meeting time. Last night we went to East Coast Custard and had about a dozen come to that. The next step for us now is trying to spot and develop leaders that can continue to help us grow and reach out to the campus.

Christi in town, New home move in, and Family Tragedy.
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on August 27, 2009
Sorry for the lack of posts, so much has been going on I have neglected informing any online viewers. This past week, our semester missionary Christi came to town, we moved into our house, and my aunt Margaret died from a climbing fall. My wife and I were so glad we were able to go to the funeral, I am so proud of my family for their faith in Christ and how He sustained them, but so saddened by the loss of my Aunt Margaret. Her and my Uncle Jac had a storybook marriage and she was a light of Christ to all who were around her. I wish I would have been able to spend more time around her and she will be greatly missed.
We also moved into our house and have found all kinds of things that need work. We are anxious to get them done so we can have students over.
Also, Christi moved in, we will be heading to Lakeland tomorrow, and hope we will be able to start the year off with being able to share Christ with someone.

movie night
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on August 3, 2009
We had a movie night the other night for college students. Our goal is to find a movie where after we are done watching it we can discuss some of the themes behind it. The night went ok, I would have preferred to have more people and perhaps a different movie would have sparked more conversation, but it was a good test run!

Ultimate Frisbee at Lakeland
Posted by sk2ndrstnd on July 9, 2009
Had a good time playing ultimate frisbee today at Lakeland. Was encouraged that a student I had met last year came out to play and will be attending Lakeland this year. Was able to vision cast about our goals for this upcoming year and hope he jumps on board.
